Slow your roll: A fast and furious routine could be sabotaging your skin, not mention your state of mind. This customizable regimen, inspired by the multi-step rituals that have been used in Asia for centuries, will leave you with a smoother, brighter complexion – and also more zen.
Dual Skin Cleanse
Unlike your grab-a-wipe-and-call-it-a night method, this two-part step leaves no grime behind.
Start with an oil cleanse. I know oil usually scares everyone away, especially if you have combination or oily skin with break outs or active acne. BUT, oil breaks down oil. Meaning an oil cleanse breaks down makeup and excess oil build up plus it is excellent for all skin types.
For the second step a cleansing gel will wash away any stubborn particles from your face and unclog pores without stripping the skin.
Add an Essence/Toner
Why do I have to use a toner or an essence after I have been cleaning my face twice, you might ask? These hydrating “pre-serums” typically have a thinner consistency, like water, and contain exfoliants such alpha hydroxyl acids that gently exfoliate your skin allowing active ingredients that are in your serums to penetrate more easily. Cosmedix Benefit Balance is a great choice for all skin types as an antioxidant toner to defend against free radical damage and aids in product absorption. Purity Balance is ideal for oily and acne prone skin because it eliminates excess oil and exfoliates to remove impurities.
Apply Serum (AM/PM) to Skin
Now you are ready for the power hitters! Serums have the greatest effect on complexions because they contain the most concentrated dose of active ingredients. Plus their lightweight formulas are easily absorbed into your skin.
There are serums for all complexions and they are a must to get your skin back on track! Make sure to apply your serum after you tone and before you moisturize. Remember to layer your products from thinnest consistency to thickest for ideal product absorption.
Some “must haves” are: Affirm contains 10 antioxidants for correction and prevention of photo-damage. Clarity controls breakouts for oily and blemish prone skin. Radiance will rejuvenate damaged, maturing menopausal skin. Cell ID, with growth factors, amino acids and antioxidants will repair the signs of premature aging skin.
Evening Exfoliants (PM only)
Polish away imperfections to brighten and refresh your skin while you are sleeping.
The best time for your skin to rest and get a treatment at the same time is at night!
Vitamin A or a triple-acid age management exfoliator is fantastic to put on in the evening before your moisturizer. Define, Defy or Serum 16 are all excellent choices. This is a perfect way to give your skin a resurfacing treatment with little to no effort.
Don’t Forget Eye Cream
The first signs of aging appear around your eyes, so find a formula that is full of antioxidants to help repair damaged cells and hydrators like hyaluronic acid to plump up and fill in fine lines. Light reflectors add an instant brightening effect to tired eyes. Opti Crystal is a favorite and contains all the ingredients you need!
Top with Moisturizer
Ahh, finally. This last layer of hydration puts a seal on your skin, holding in all the ingredients you have already applied. Emulsion is an intense hydrator from Cosmedix and Mystic is a perfect hydrating mist to have in your purse with you when you are traveling and can be applied on top of makeup!
Sunscreen is a nonnegotiable step for your daytime routine. It is the most effective weapon we have got against aging and skin cancer. If you do not use SPF this entire routine will be ineffective. Apply your sunscreen as your last step and remember to reapply every couple hours. Always protect your skin!
You can keep filtering your selfies – or you can slough off the dead cells that are dulling your glow. Most positive skin results depend on you doing your job at home with your daily skin care regime and good products. So give your skin at least 7 minutes to complete these steps every morning and evening.
